Confirmation portraits

Almost spring, but we still have lots of snow...which we are getting even more as I speak :). It's been a nice and relaxing day today - client meeting in the morning in Mäkelänrinne, so after that I just had to have a swim (with my sister). Then lunch and oops it's already 2pm.

Also, today my husband flew to Paris where he'll stay for two days and then he is off to the Sahara desert to do the Marathon des Sables for the next seven days. I would so love to be there too and photograph but not this time.

These images are from a recent confirmation portrait session I had - beautiful winter light and the wet slush on the ground we didn't care about :).

Maternity portraits

As you might know I have been building my new website, blog and portfolio with the help of designer Pedro Reis. The new splash page is already up at www.elinamanninen.com and everything else is on the way too. This is the first time I'm building a physical portfolio as well so it's been as much of a mental exercise as taking time to choose the photos. And I'm getting there even if sometimes the job feels huge :). The Porfolio folder is coming soon from Germany (and I'm thanking Merja Yeung from Studio Asadin for advice! ).

These were from a maternity fitness session I did the other week, we also did these beautiful portraits. All the best for the little one who is now about one week old :).

Light testing again :) I Valokuvaaja Elina Manninen

Waiting for our model again - what else is there to do than photograph Merja :). Totally empty Merikaapelihalli in Kaapelitehdas and afternoon (very quickly disappearing) light.

Tomorrow morning I'm off to Portugal for 6 weeks! So no work in Finland during that time, I'm taking bookings starting from January the 16th. Hopefully we have some snow then as well :). In Portugal I will be working with designer Pedro Reis to get all my new stuff ready. I will also be with Erik Reis in his studio. So I think I have to pack now. I will be updating my blog from there as well so don't go away :).

My sister. And what a beautiful location we found just before the sunset. Canon 24-70L f2.8 lens, natural light.

Portraits - Henkilökuvia

You probably already know who this is. My sister. Took my 85mm f1.8 out for change and shot the portraits with the widest aperture. Love the way it blurs the background. We also did a shoot inside for stock - a bit crazy but good :).

...

Spring is slowly coming... Kevät on tulossa hiljalleen...

Helsinki is still cold and wet but slowly there's more signs of spring :). On Saturday I did a quick photoshoot for a friend - we found this cute spot right in the middle of Helsinki.

Yesterday I went to a lecture by Steve McCurry - inspirational & great to see one of the best photographers in the world, hear their stories, see their photos. I'm glad I had a chance to see that!

...

Sunday afternoon was fun with these 3 :). We just missed the sunshine but didn't matter. And what a gorgeous location!

....

Winter is beautiful - like I said - but also it can get a bit dark, especially if you're used to Australian beautiful light all year round :). But the good thing is it has been a great learning curve for me and the darker it gets the better I have to control my light. I love natural light but the truth is, in Finland, in winter, it's not enough to only use natural light.

With natural light you still have to control it, it doesn't mean you are not 'lighting you subject' -- light is light, doesn't matter what form of light it is. You still have to know what you are doing and use the available light the best you can to create what you want to achieve.

Enough of that :).

...
